{"id":206,"date":"2025-04-15T13:02:54","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T07:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/?post_type=highlights&#038;p=206"},"modified":"2025-04-16T14:07:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T08:22:26","slug":"boosting-renewables-in-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"highlights","link":"https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/highlights\/boosting-renewables-in-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"Boosting renewables in agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than half Nepal\u2019s farmland lacks access to irrigation, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/record\/31112\">critical input<\/a> for food production and food security. Lift irrigation, where water is pumped up from a lower water source, could be a powerful solution to irrigation needs, but requires energy. Local renewable energy is environmentally sustainable, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/records\/v9zz7-tvf45\">most practical to run<\/a>. But with the set-up costs often prohibitively expensive for many farmers, the Government of Nepal supports installations with subsidies and technical assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government is committed to extending lift irrigation powered by renewables across Nepal and has budgeted <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/records\/rw5j6-t9250\">USD 16 million<\/a> in the fiscal year 2024\/25, along with funding from international partners. To guide this investment, ICIMOD worked with Nepal\u2019s Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) to co-develop a decision-making platform \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/records\/19n3m-nrp52\">Productive Use of Renewable Energy platform<\/a> (PURE) \u2013&nbsp;which consolidates data from multiple sources to estimate the potential area, cost and power-generation from RELI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a-1024x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a-1024x530.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a-768x397.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hkh.icimod.org\/ar2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/outcome3a.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A screenshot of the Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) platform for Nepal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ICIMOD also provided technical support to AEPC to develop a GESI-responsive <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/record\/36563\">Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) Framework<\/a> to accurately select sites with the highest potential for irrigation. As a result of this support, <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/records\/cxx93-34b95\">AEPC adopted PURE to identify potential sites<\/a> and mobilise funds to implement government-led projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, AEPC used PURE to identify 48 potential RELI sites out of a possible 439 across three provinces in Nepal.
